Paul Smith Exhibition at the Design Museum

Sometimes there is so much happening in London that I miss out on things totally, so when a friend saw an offer for the Hello, My Name is Paul Smith exhibition at the Design Museum we decided to book. Last Wednesday afternoon despite the rain I took the afternoon off work, a perk of being self-employed, and we headed down there.

This wasn’t just an exhibition about Paul Smith but a collaboration with him, there was a real sense that he had been very involved in putting it together, from the hand written descriptions at the beginning to mock ups of his office and studio and a video showing a day in the life of a catwalk show, his personality was very much there.

There was so much detail involved as you would expect from a designer, the office and studio mock ups felt so cluttered, with very little surface space showing, a bit like my desk! I’m sure though that every small item and picture were carefully placed to create the perfect room set.

The exhibition itself was very autobiographical and started with Paul Smith’s first shop, followed by information about him including his love of photography. It then featured several of the commercial collaborations he has been involved in, included a striped Mini, some skis and Evian bottles. And of course as you would expect from a fashion designer there was a room dedicated to various items from his collections, I especially loved the sparkly Christmas jumper! At the centre of it all was collection of prints and photographs collected over the years, some of these were by Paul Smith and others were ones he had acquired.

So True - What a great message to end the exhibition on!

All in all it was a fascinating exhibition, which we finished off with a visit around the rest of the museum and a free glass of bubbly which came with our ticket. What a great way to spend a rainy afternoon in London!
