I Ran The Bupa London 10K

You might remember in my post London and Proud I set out a list of things I wanted to do over the year, one of those was to do a 10km run. I am proud to say I have now done it!

London in Pictures

By now you have probably worked out a couple of things about me, firstly I love the city I live in and am proud to call London home and secondly I love to take photos. As you can probably imaging I have taken thousands of pictures of London over the years, I know I have numerous ones that are taken in the same or similar spots. I thought in this post I would share with you just a handful of my London photos, I have tried to include ones that are slightly different rather than your typical London postcard images, these include ones of taken from unusual positions, plus some take slightly closer to home.

Beautiful Pink Tulips

I love flowers and whilst I hardly ever buy them when I do it is a real treat. I was buying flowers for my mum for Mothers Day in Tesco on Sunday and I couldn't resist buying these tulips for myself. Along with orchids tulips are my favourite flowers. These have really opened up since I bought them and the pink and white flower is now obvious, plus as you can see from the picture below they are on a table below a painting of more tulips. I think the picture and the flowers really compliment each other so they look lovely where they are.

What I wore to the theatre

I remember as a child and teenager the theatre was always a treat and a time to dress up in our best clothes. These days that has changed, I love going to the theatre but it has become something of a norm rather than a treat, I guess that is one of the great things about living in London there is so much choice and it is usually possible to find something on offer! There is however still something special about seeing a live performance, though it no longer seems necessary to dress for the theatre, I am sure some people will disagree but for most including me this is not the case.

Last night I went to the theatre to see The Weir. The play is set in a small town Irish pub and features just five people, four local men and a lady who has moved down from Dublin. I'm still not sure how much I enjoyed it, whilst billed as a comedy there were some funny parts but in general it was quite dark, I often felt uncomfortable as if I was listening in on other people's conversations, but I guess that was the point of the play.

Skiing in the Beautiful Italian Dolomites

Having shared a bit already about my recent skiing holiday I thought I would share some of my favourite photos. Loving photography as I do and trying to put some of my new found skills to the test I ended up taking over 400 photos! Many were of friends or just didn't come out well, so don't worry I won't post them all here. I will however share a few of my favourite scenery ones.

First though I should set the scene, I was staying in a small resort in the Dolomites in Italy which gave us access to 12 different ski areas and 1,200 km of slopes meaning we could ski in a different place every day and enjoy so much of the natural beauty. The scenery is very different to places I've skied in the Alps as there are various stark rock formations jutting out on the horizon. It is however just a beautiful and I hope that come across in my photos.

Italian Icicles

Whilst away I couldn't resist taking some pictures of the icicles hanging off the roof above our balcony, the patterns, light and the colours in them and the snow around them are amazing. There is so much beauty to be found in nature and I think sometimes we forget that, I therefore love taking photos of my surroundings whether its icicles like these, trees or even clouds it is fascinating to see the natural shapes and patterns. I think these pictures are the perfect example of this I hope you agree!

What do you like to take pictures of?

What I wore on the Slopes

Sorry for being a bit quiet over the last couple of weeks, but I was away skiing in Italy which led to me getting a cold and feeling a bit under the weather. I'm better now though and to make up for the silence I thought I would write a few different posts relating to my trip, including some photos taken.

Flowers or Orchids to be Precise!

Whilst taking the pictures for my Valentine's outfit article and thinking about what colour Radiant Orchid really was I decided to look closer at some of my orchids. I love orchids there is something so elegant about them, and have quite a few in different stages of bloom around the house. I ended up taking these pictures partly to try out my new found photography skills and partly because the subject was so beautiful.

I hope you like the pictures, I love them all and can't decide which my favourite orchid is as they are all so different. Which is yours?

Valentine's Dinner with Friends

Being single it was nice to forget about Valentine’s Day and enjoy a dinner party at a friend’s house with other single friends. Not a loved up couple in sight, just good food, good wine and great company, I can’t think of a better way to spend the evening! As it was Friday night I knew everyone would make an effort and dress smart, and I had just bought the perfect dress.

Earlier in the week I agreed to join up with Blinds Supermarket to celebrate Radiant Orchid being the colour of the year. With this in mind I hit the John Lewis website looking for outfits and items in pink or purple, whilst one item I bought wasn't quite the right colour it was inspired by it. I have to say I love John Lewis and the fact that I could order one day and pick it up from my local Waitrose the next afternoon, its so easy!

A Beautiful Day for a Run

For the last 18 months or so I have been going running with a group of friends on a Sunday morning, we are officially a running group who meets at the local leisure centre, but in reality most of us knew each other before we started running and were encouraged to join by our friend who organises it. My friend had been trying to get me to join the group for about 2 years before I eventually gave in and joined a beginners group. Since then all the other beginners dropped out and I have become a regular runner, and have even started to enjoy my Sunday morning run, especially on days when the sun is out as was the case yesterday.

E is for Elephants

A few years ago in London they had the Elephant Parade during which over 200 painted elephants were placed around the city. My friends and I had great fun hunting out the elephants whilst rediscovering the joys of London and even visiting a few new places along the way.

I have to admit though it's not just Elephants that I've traipsed around London looking for, there have also been Cows, Eggs, Phone Boxes and Olympic Mascots!

I got hooked on the concept when I was in New York a few years earlier with a friend and they had a Cow Parade, we loved seeing the cows as we explored the city, then when my friend moved to Atlanta I was really excited when I visited her to discover a Cow Parade there too. These giant pieces of art are a great way to encourage people to appreciate art and explore a city whilst also raising money for charity, what fun!

Here are a selection of some of my favourite elephants, in a variety of different locations around London, most of the photos were taken on my old Samsung mobile so sorry for the poor quality.

An Outfit for a Saturday Night in the Pub

I never know what to wear on a Saturday night out, do I go casual or should I dress it up? I had this dilemma once again when a group of us were going out to a pub in Kilburn, North London for a friend's birthday. The fact that the pub has a dance floor later in the evening made matters harder, as did it make it more dressy?

In the end I decided to dress up a bit and settled on this outfit (sorry about the poor quality photos) which I think is dressy without being over the top.

D is for Docklands

This week as part of my photography course we went down to Canary Wharf in London's Docklands to take photos. This was my first proper attempt at night photography and the first time I've used a tripod, some of my photos came out a bit wonky, especially the ones of the Dome as I was on a bridge and I couldn't see to level the tripod properly, but most were fine. It was a fun evening and it was great to get out to take photos putting some of the theory of the classroom into practice with the help of our teacher, plus we were lucky with the weather I think it was the only night this week that it hasn't rained!  Here is a small selection of the photos I took.

Paul Smith Exhibition at the Design Museum

Sometimes there is so much happening in London that I miss out on things totally, so when a friend saw an offer for the Hello, My Name is Paul Smith exhibition at the Design Museum we decided to book. Last Wednesday afternoon despite the rain I took the afternoon off work, a perk of being self-employed, and we headed down there.

Cars, Cars and More Cars

For various reasons my car has been an important part of the last week. I spent half of Wednesday in it driving to and from Birmingham for work. I have been thinking for a while that I want to change my car, so on Friday I spent two hours at a local Audi dealer where I test drove the A1, I liked it but I'm baffled by all the different models, finishes, extras, finance packages etc. I think I need to look at a couple of other cars before I make a decision.

Finally my assignment this week for my photography course was to take pictures of a vehicle, it was only natural for me to photograph my car. Each week for the course we have to submit our favourite photos and these are then judged by the class. Here are the four photos I sent in, the third one was my teachers favourite, which one is yours?

An Outfit for a Sunday Tea Party

On Sunday a couple of my friends were celebrating their 40th birthdays with a tea party at one of their flats. When I say tea party this wasn't just a few friends over for tea and cake but a rather larger affair with at least 50 people dropping by over the course of the afternoon, I knew my friends would go to a lot of effort with the food, homemade cakes, scones and sandwiches galore! My dilemma was what to wear? Being a Sunday afternoon I didn't want anything too dressy but I wanted to make a bit of an effort whilst keeping it casual. Several male friends were going and although unlikely there was a chance there might have been some new eligible men there too, so I needed to look good.

Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes & Old Trafford

I've been meaning to write this post for a little while so finally here it is. As you know by now I’m a bit of a Manchester United fan, so when one of my friends asked if I wanted to go with her to Sir Alex Ferguson’s book launch talk in Manchester I could not say not.  As United were playing Norwich in the Capital One Cup the next day we decided to make a few days of it and stay for the match too. This gave me the opportunity to cross the Old Trafford Tour and going to a match off my list of things to do this year. It was an amazing few days but I guess I should start at the beginning.

With a storm brewing in London we decided to leave on the Sunday before it hit rather than wait till the Monday when we were originally planning on heading to Manchester, we were staying at my friends family home so had the flexibility. Going on the Sunday also meant that the Monday was free to do the tour of Old Trafford, something I have wanted to do for a while.

Yum Yum - Mini Eggs are back!

I love chocolate, but my favourite Mini Eggs are only available for a few months of the year (January to Easter). You can imagine how excited I was when I found them in the supermarket on New Year's Eve, I just had to buy a packet, and share them virtually at least with all of you!

A Bit of Sparkle for New Year's Eve

I always find New Year's Eve to be overrated, and resent paying double to go to the same club that I could go to on a regular Saturday night. Over the last few years I have either been away or had a few friends over for the evening. This year though a few friends wanted to go out so after much discussion and emails back and forth we decided to go to a comedy evening in Covent Garden (Central London). The evening sounded fun and value for money with food, comedy and music and if we were lucky we might even be able to see the fireworks at midnight. So next came the question of what to wear? Whilst I wanted to dress up I didn't want anything too dressy, in the end I opted for some old favourites!
