Cooking with Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville

Yesterday I decided to go shopping at Westfield Stratford, whilst my shopping trip might not have been a success I did get to watch Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville cook, or more to the point for Nev especially talk whilst the chef’s Brendan Fyldes and Michael Wignall cooked!

Ok so the timing of my shopping trip and the choice of destination might not have been a total coincidence, having seen on Twitter that they were going to be there to promote their new restaurant Café Football, which opens in Westfield on 12th December, I couldn't resist going down to see two of my footballing heroes.

They were doing two demonstrations hosted by Old Trafford Stadium Announcer Alan Keegan, who created a great atmosphere bantering with the Giggs, Neville and the crowd. These both included a Q&A from the fans, I watched the whole of the first one from near the front and popped into the second one in time for the Q&A from the fans. I'm writing this from memory so the wording is not exact and I have probably paraphrased what was actually said. I’m sure loads was said that I have missed and I hope I haven’t said too much!

During the demo’s Gary or more to the point Brendan prepared Nev’s Noodle Pot, a dish that resembles a pot noodle, both Gary and Ryan showed their knife skills, or lack of! Whilst Ryan and Michael each assembled the Chocolate Turf, I have to say Giggsy’s one did look good and when he was given 8 out of 10 for it he joked that was more than he was averaging on the pitch. While Nev joked that he had been doing most of the tasting of the dishes on the menu, reflecting the fact he has put on weight since retiring from football.

I've been trying to remember what else was said and what they were asked, whilst I can’t remember everything here are a few of the questions and their answers (I've paraphrased here).

What food/meal would you have if stranded on an island? Nev straight in with a Bacon Sandwich, Giggsy after a bit of thought, said it’s probably cheating as it includes several different foods but a Sunday Roast, sounded like that was his favourite meal.

Are United going to win the League? Giggs said absolutely or words to that effect, I had heard Fergie say the same thing a few weeks ago, so I hope they are both right!

Who’s going to win the World Cup? Nev unsurprising abstained from answering whilst Giggs thought Brazil would win, saying they were a great team and had the home advantage.

Have the team had the “hairdryer” from David Moyes? Giggs said yes they had and that Moyes hadn't been too happy at the start of the season. He also said that he has a very similar background and temperament to Sir Alex.

Was The Boss Burger on the menu inspired by Fergie? Both Nev and Giggsy laughed at this but gave no direct response, but did say that there are football influences in the menu. They did point out that the Treble Pies were of course named after United’s Treble win. Incidentally when asked separately about their best moments in football Gary said his was the treble win, whilst Ryan’s was his first title.

The second session was finished off with a birthday cake for Giggsy and the audience singing to him, he joked he was planning on keeping it quiet! Somehow I don’t think that’s going to happen, after all it isn’t every day that a top footballer turns forty.

It was great to see these football superstars off the pitch and relaxed and joking with the crowd. And I have to say that despite a supposed weight gain by Nev they were both looking pretty good, even better in the flesh than on TV.
